As the decades passed, Scorpio evolved while preserving its mission. In 1989, nightlife icons Rick Wilds and Donald O’Shields acquired the club’s branding and leadership from the Tysons, ushering in a new era of growth and strengthening the Scorpio legacy. Their vision helped solidify Scorpio as a cultural touchstone for drag performers, DJs, dancers, and generations of guests who found not just nightlife, but home.
For more than five decades, Scorpio anchored itself on Freedom Drive, becoming one of the Carolinas’ most enduring LGBTQ+ venues. In a cultural landscape where queer spaces were often pushed to the margins, and where drag, community, and togetherness were criminalized or looked down upon, Scorpio endured, thrived, and became woven into the social fabric of Charlotte’s history.
In 2023, the Freedom Drive chapter came to a close — not with an ending, but with a transformation. In 2024, Scorpio reopened in the heart of South End at 225 Fairwood Avenue, stepping into a bold new era of nightlife, entertainment, and community. Today our 15,000 sq. ft. multi-level venue spans five distinct entertainment spaces and two breathtaking rooftops, blending historic soul with a modern, inclusive club experience. As one of Charlotte’s largest nightlife and dance entertainment venues, Scorpio creates an atmosphere designed for everyone, from the high-energy pulse of a packed dance floor to the relaxed sophistication of a chill cocktail lounge. We truly have a space for every mood, every moment, and every person.
Scorpio stands today as more than a club. It is a living, breathing piece of queer culture at a time when LGBTQ+ nightlife venues are closing across the country and the world at an alarming rate. With each weekend, each show, and each dance, we are actively creating and preserving safe spaces for self-expression, connection, and celebration.
Fridays and Saturdays at Scorpio are electric. We light up the weekend with drag performances at 10:00 PM and 12:30 AM, showcasing artistry and storytelling rooted in decades of queer performance tradition. Multiple DJs spin throughout the venue, ensuring that wherever you land, the vibe fits you. The Main Stage and central dance floor pump out high-energy open-format Top 40 and EDM remixes, the Veranda leans into 90s and 00s nostalgic grooves, the Parlor offers interactive request-driven sets, the Rooftop brings throwback hip-hop and R&B under the skyline, and the Terrace Lounge offers the perfect escape - an intimate oasis for conversation and cocktails. (During winter months, Rooftop programming moves to the Veranda so the energy stays warm and full of life.)
Every Saturday night, Scorpio delivers a show unlike anything else in the Carolinas, a fully immersive experience that transforms the venue into a live performance arena. Our 12:30 AM Saturday Production Show blends drag performance with full-scale concert production, surrounding guests with powerful audio, stunning lighting, and massive visuals. Queens perform throughout the venue, not just on stage, bringing the show directly to the audience and creating a dynamic, interactive environment. With multi-camera live coverage broadcast across the entire club - from fixed broadcast cameras to roaming mobile camera crews - guests never miss a moment. Whether you are on the dance floor, in a lounge, upstairs on the rooftop, or ordering a drink at the bar, you are always at the heart of the action.
Our bar program reflects the full spectrum of nightlife indulgence, offering everything from simple pours and fast-service mixed drinks to a fully developed craft cocktail experience built on quality spirits and thoughtful technique. Guests can enjoy botanical gin blends, barrel-aged whiskeys, smoked old fashioneds infused over locally sourced North Carolina wood chips, fresh-brewed espresso martinis made to order with rich house-pulled espresso, and a range of signature cocktails crafted with care and character. Many of these cocktails are poured over hand-chipped artisan ice blocks, giving each drink a smooth, clean chill and elevated presentation. Whether you are sipping something refined in the lounge or grabbing a drink between songs on the dance floor, Scorpio’s bartenders pour with personality, precision, and pride.
Our venue is ideal for any occasion - from nights out and celebrations to private events - all set against sweeping skyline views of Uptown Charlotte from both rooftops.
Scorpio’s history is long, powerful, and resilient. From a small disco lounge before Stonewall, to a legendary Freedom Drive institution, to our vibrant South End home, we continue to stand for community, pride, and belonging.
Thank you for supporting queer spaces. Scorpio is a safe space for all members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies. We welcome guests of every race, every age, every walk of life, and every identity. As long as you have love and acceptance in your heart, you are welcome at the legendary Scorpio.
