Blood, Water, Earth is a stunning elemental multi-media dance work by acclaimed Member of the Order of Canada Santee Smith. Audiences may remember Smith and her company Kaha:wi Dance Theatre from the last production they brought to Nogojiwanong- The Mush Hole. With extraordinary visuals and live accompaniment, Blood, Water, Earth unites artists from Turtle Island (Canada) and Aotearoa (New Zealand) with key collaborators Kahnyen’kehàka artist Santee Smith and Ngai Tahu video/dance artist Louise Potiki Bryant, placing the Konkwehon:we/Mana Wahine (Maori Woman’s) worldview in the vanguard.

An absurdist choreo-literary-logistics exercise in poetic form, Bad Poetry is part lecture-demo, part dance performance, part queer clown turn, and a testament to how loving your own bad poetry can lead to self-acceptance. Sara Porter is an adventurous performer, writer, and educator, working at the intersection of memoir + movement. Celebrated for her daring imagination and sense of humour, Sara is noted for being truly multi-disciplinary. She centres her work in a feminist, queer worldview, and deals with the body as a point of personal reflection. She has presented her works at theatres and festivals across Canada, in Scotland, the US, and UK.
Porter’s performance will be musically accompanied by Benj Rowland

Bodies Under Siege: New works by Allison Cummings & Kate Story

This double bill features two vastly different yet highly complementary new works dealing with reactions to cancer diagnoses. Renowned local multi-disciplinary artist and writer Kate Story’s humorous, erudite and poignant work Hysterical uses movement and storytelling to get to heart of their experience, whilst also tackling the wider questions of bodies with uteruses and their position in the medical establishment. Allison Cummings’ pure dance work approaches the subject from a more visceral place. Told through the lens of survivors Cummings and locally-born and raised dancer Christy Stoeten who performs the piece, Opponent explores their shared experiences with diagnosis, treatment, and the permanent impact Breast Cancer has had on their lives, bodies and creative selves.

The Austin Doran Hall at The Mount
With explorations of iconic cowboy imagery inhabited by two magnificent Black performers, Braids & Heritage is full of unexpected juxtapositions of cultural themes that, in combination, act forcefully as jubilant celebration of diversity and creativity. Stacey Désilier and Jossua Satinée decolonize the mythology of the cowboy, taking the stage in cowboy boots and launching into a line dance. Playing with their striking resemblance to each other, the charismatic duo juxtapose square dancing with the cake walk, the moonwalk, and twerking in a choreographed piece drawing on both the spirit of the past and Afrofuturist visions.
This event includes a free line dancing workshop following the show for all interested participants. Whether you want to dance or sit back and enjoy a drink, this promises to be a wonderful time for all!
