Event Information

Join Genentech at KQED’s studio headquarters for an evening about the unlikely Bay Area story that helped launch modern biotech and rewrote the rules of science.

Featuring a screening of The Impossible Bet, a new documentary film produced in collaboration with T Brand Studio, the content studio of New York Times Advertising, the evening will explore the people, places and trailblazing spirit of discovery behind Genentech’s South San Francisco roots. From a bold idea sketched on napkins to the birth of a new industry, the story traces how a culture of curiosity, risk-taking and bold experimentation continues to inspire what comes next.

The evening will open with remarks from Genentech CEO Ashley Magargee and U.S. Representative Kevin Mullin, a longtime champion of the Bay Area’s life sciences and innovation community.

The Impossible Bet: The Bay Area Story That Changed Medicine invites guests to reflect on how an unlikely idea born here in the Bay Area grew far beyond its origins — helping launch an industry, transform medicine and shape scientific progress, patients and communities around the world.
