Hey Rosetta! have always made music that reaches for something larger. Formed in St. John’s, Newfoundland in the mid-2000s, the seven-piece built a singular sound around Tim Baker’s emotionally direct songwriting - expansive sonic soundscapes filled with guitars, strings, quiet spaces and enormous crescendos. Their songs could feel intimate one moment and almost impossibly big the next.
Over more than a decade together, Hey Rosetta! grew from the clubs and halls of Newfoundland into one of Canada’s most beloved live bands. Their 2008 breakthrough, Into Your Lungs (and around in your heart and on through your blood), was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize, beginning a run that included the acclaimed albums Seeds and Second Sight, JUNO Award nominations, and years of touring across Canada and around the world.
Through it all, the band remained deeply connected to the place they came from. Their music carried something of Newfoundland with it: distance and closeness, leaving and returning, harsh weather, landscape, community. But those songs travelled. For listeners who found the band along the way, they became tied to their own sense of place, their own relationships, and their own passage of time.
Hey Rosetta! disbanded in 2017, closing that chapter with a series of farewell performances. In the years since, Tim Baker has built a celebrated solo career, allowing the songwriting that anchored Hey Rosetta! to stretch into new forms. Against that backdrop, the idea of the band returning seemed, for a long time, almost unreachable. Then something shifted.
During a rare quiet stretch in his solo career, Baker began playing the old songs again. “Instead of distance or resistance, I felt life & energy there,” he says. He reached out to Phil Maloney, Romesh Thavanathan, Adam Hogan, Josh Ward, Kinley Dowling and Mara Pellerin. Everyone said yes.
“Like blowing an ember into flame, that was.”
Now, nearly a decade after their last shows and two decades after their earliest recordings, Hey Rosetta! are returning to the stage—not to recreate the past, but to inhabit these songs again as the people they are today.
There is history in them now: years of friendship, distance and change layered onto music written in another time. But there is also the thing that made Hey Rosetta! matter in the first place - the intensity, the volume, the vulnerability, and what Baker calls the band’s “defiant hope.”
“This is what it was always for,” Baker says, “and what it is for again.”
Hey Rosetta! are back. And, as Tim puts it, it will be “loud enough to shake you.”

JAG Soundhouse welcomes support persons accompanying guests with disabilities who require assistance with communication, mobility, personal care, medical needs, or access to our facilities.
One (1) support person may be admitted at no additional cost per guest requiring assistance, provided valid documentation is presented.

The guest requiring support must hold a valid admission ticket, which must be requested directly through JAG Soundhouse. Attendant passes cannot be booked online and are available in limited quantities.
