From the outset, Roi Turbo have established themselves as a standout electronic duo,
blurring genre lines to create grooves built on feeling rather than formula. South
African brothers Benjamin and Conor McCarthy have released two acclaimed EPs and
recently completed their second world tour supporting Empire of the Sun. With
Benjamin leading the production and Conor bringing his background in percussion,
bass, and guitar, Roi Turbo crafts music that's sharp, infectious, and made to move
rooms.
Formed in Cape Town and now based in London, their sound is rooted in a lifelong
musical partnership. The brothers built their first home studio while sharing a
bedroom, teaching themselves through records, YouTube tutorials, and secondhand
gear. Their influences span William Onyeabor's psychedelic grooves, '80s and '90s South
African bubblegum, Nigerian disco, and the dance-rock production of Paul Epworth, all
filtered through the soundtrack of their parents' '80s CD collection.
Their debut EP, Volcano Cigarette Shop (2023), paired punchy synths and driving
basslines with classic Telecaster and Rhodes textures. Follow-up EP Bazooka (2024)
expanded their sound, blending analog warmth with digital precision across disco, funk,
house, and dance-rock. Every track reflects not only their eclectic influences but also
the creative chemistry they've developed as brothers.
Now, with their third EP on the horizon, Roi Turbo are pushing their sound even
further. Bigger, bolder, and constantly evolving, the McCarthy brothers are proving
themselves impossible to ignore.
