About Melissa Etheridge

“I chose to survive,” Melissa Etheridge sings on “Being Alive,” the powerful opening track of her 17th album, Rise. After a brief pause, she bursts out, “God, I love being alive!”—a moment that captures the emotional journey behind the record. Co-produced with Shooter Jennings and featuring her longtime band, Rise is an intimate, richly layered collection shaped by the years since 2019’s The Medicine Show.

The album moves between joy and reflection. Songs like “Don’t You Want a Woman,” “Tomboy,” and “Davina” celebrate confidence and playfulness, while “Matches” nods to her musical roots. More personal tracks, especially “Call You,” confront the loss of her son Beckett in 2021, exploring grief, healing, and the strength of community. “The Other Side of Blue,” with Chris Stapleton, and “More Love,” written for her daughter’s wedding, carry themes of hope, love, and resilience.

The title Rise reflects Etheridge’s outlook: life brings hardship, but you endure and grow. That perspective was shaped by personal loss, the pandemic, her memoir, Broadway show, and advocacy work through the Etheridge Foundation. During this time, she connected with fans through streaming and focused deeply on family—though she wrote little new music until late 2024.

When she returned to songwriting, it came from a place of acceptance. “You survive. You go on. And this is life,” she says. Her collaboration with Jennings helped bring that vision to life, blending rock, Americana, and country influences. The sessions were fast, natural, and deeply creative.

Ultimately, Rise is an album about gratitude—finding light after loss, strength in love, and meaning in simply being alive.
