"facing it is what life is"

I went through the portal once. My soul harboured another soul for a time. And then that soul emerged and stared me in the face with all the fierceness and wisdom and anger of all the lives she lived before and all the lives she will ever live. It is the strangest thing, when you still haven’t learned how to care for your own inner child, to come face to face with it.

I created Toledano in the wake of the most tumultuous years of my life. 

I gathered 150 of my own personal voicenotes sent to friends over 7 years, recordings of conversations with friends and family, and a collection of ancestral Sephardic and Moroccan songs, and assembled them into a sort of verbatim theatre. 

Toledano is my sisyphean gesture of mourning, self-soothing, and reaching. It exists in a safe, other world: the realm of my ancestors’ endangered Judeo-Spanish dialects. It serves as my link between the vastly different, and yet somehow cyclical, realities of all the women who came before me, and all the women who have yet to be. 

It’s my invitation to you to face and embrace your own deep secrets and shame, and embrace and celebrate the messiness and unpredictability of your life.

On November 29, for the first time and for one day only, I am presenting the full realization of Toledano, complete with a visual world created by Nick Iwaskow and an opening performance by my beautiful friend and fellow mother Rachel, aka Blue Lobelia.

We will do it twice in the day. At 3:30pm and at 8pm. It will be a marathon for us. Pick the one that aligns with your day and join us.
