Progressive American Flat Track makes its long-awaited return to Tennessee on Saturday, June 6, 2026, with the inaugural Nashville Short Track presented by Memphis Shades. Round 8 of the Progressive AFT Championship brings the world's best flat track motorcycle racers to Billy Lane's Sons of Speed Nashville Short Track at Tennessee National Raceway in Hohenwald, Tennessee. This is a brand new event on the calendar, and it's set to be one of the most exciting stops of the season.
A New Chapter for Tennessee Flat Track
For years, Progressive AFT fans in Tennessee have been waiting for the series to return to the Volunteer State. That wait is finally over. The Nashville Short Track marks AFT's triumphant comeback to Tennessee, bringing elite professional motorcycle racing to a state with deep roots in motorsports culture. Tennessee National Raceway, located about an hour southwest of Nashville, provides the perfect setting for this new event.
Sons of Speed Nashville Short Track
The track itself carries a unique pedigree. Tennessee National Raceway is home to Billy Lane's Sons of Speed racing series, a vintage flat track competition inspired by the board track racing era of the 1920s. Billy Lane, the legendary custom motorcycle builder known for his appearances on Discovery Channel's Biker Build-Off and Monster Garage, founded Sons of Speed to honor the early days of American motorcycle racing when brands like Harley-Davidson, Indian, Excelsior, and Pope battled it out on wooden board tracks across the country.
Lane has been building and racing motorcycles for nearly 40 years and relocated to Tennessee to continue his work and raise his family. His passion for preserving motorcycle racing history while pushing the sport forward makes Tennessee National Raceway a fitting home for Progressive AFT's return to the state.
Short Track Racing: A Fist Fight in a Phone Booth
Short track racing is where flat track gets up close and personal. Held on oval dirt courses approximately a quarter mile in length, short tracks feature quick laps and fierce battles. There's nowhere to hide on a tight oval. Every pass is hard-earned. Every position is contested. It's been described as "a fist fight in a phone booth," and that's exactly what you'll see at the Nashville Short Track.
Unlike the high-speed drafting battles of the mile ovals or the flowing corners of the half-miles, short track racing rewards aggression, reflexes, and the ability to make something happen in tight quarters. Starts are critical. Positioning is everything. And when the pack comes roaring out of the corners just feet apart, the intensity is unmatched.
The Racing
Watch the premier Mission AFT SuperTwins class take on the tight Tennessee National Raceway oval. These production-based twin-cylinder motorcycles (649-900cc) represent the pinnacle of dirt track racing, piloted by the fastest athletes on dirt. The biggest names in the sport will be fighting for every inch of track in their pursuit of championship points.
The KICKER AFT Singles class showcases the next generation of flat track stars aboard production-based 450cc machines specially prepared for competition. And with the Royal Enfield Build. Train. Race. program making an appearance at the Nashville Short Track, you'll also witness the all-women class that continues to elevate aspiring women racers and inspire fans across all generations.
Northern Tool + Equipment Legends Build: Student Challenge
The Nashville Short Track will also host the public debut of a very special project: the Northern Tool + Equipment Legends Build: Student Challenge motorcycle. This is a nine-month initiative where high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) students have transformed a 2025 Harley-Davidson Nightster into an XR750-inspired flat track racer.
The students have been guided by some of the biggest names in flat track history, including Scott Parker, Chris Carr, Kenny Coolbeth Jr., and Billy Lane himself. This program represents exactly what Progressive AFT and the broader motorcycle community are working to achieve: connecting the next generation of riders, builders, and fans to the sport's rich heritage while giving them hands-on skills that will serve them for life. The public unveiling of this machine at the Nashville Short Track is a can't-miss moment for fans who appreciate the craftsmanship and history that define American motorcycle racing.
What is Flat Track Racing?
Flat track is America's original extreme sport, the oldest and purest form of motorcycle racing in the country. The formula is simple: oval dirt track, no front brakes, and the throttle wide open. Riders slide into corners at incredible speeds, fighting for position with nothing but skill, bravery, and a steel shoe scraping the dirt.
