The Bar-Kays
Even though four group founders were killed in a 1967 plane crash along with Otis Redding, the Bar-Kays came back to reign as one of the top R&B/FUNK outfits of the '70s. The original Bar-Kays were a Memphis instrumental combo who scored an R&B hit on Volt with 1967's rousing "Soul Finger." Guitarist Jimmy King, organist Ronnie Caldwell, drummer Carl Cunningham, and saxist Phalon Jones perished with Redding, leaving trumpeter Ben Cauley and bassist James Alexander to re-form the group. After honing their chops with session work at Stax, the new Bar-Kays kicked off a long string of R&B smashes in 1976 with "Shake Your Rump to the Funk" on Mercury, In 1979's Injoy (which featured the Top Five R&B hit "Move Your Boogie Body"), 1980's As One, 1981's Nightcruising (which spawned two hits in "Hit and Run" and "Freaky Behavior"), and 1982's Propositions (more hits in "Do It (Let Me See You Shake)" and "She Talks to Me with Her Body"). All of those albums, save for As One, went gold.
Club Nouveau
Club Nouveau is an R&B-pop band that was formed by record producer/performer Jay King in 1986 in Sacramento, California, subsequent to the breakup of the Timex Social Club. Other members of Club Nouveau included original members Denzil Foster, Thomas McElroy, Samuelle Prater, and Valerie Watson. Additional members include James L. Richard II, Kevin Irving, David Agent, Walter Phillips, and Mario Corbino. The band’s name (French for “New Club”) was changed from its original incarnation, Jet Set, to exploit the breakup of the Timex Social Club. The group was signed by Warner Bros. Records, on which Club Nouveau released its first three albums. From its debut album, Life, Love, and Pain, which was released in 1986, the group scored four consecutive hits: “Jealousy” (essentially an answer song responding to Timex Social Club’s hit “Rumors”), “Situation #9,” a cover of Bill Withers’s “Lean on Me,” and “Why You Treat Me So Bad.” The latter was interpolated by the Luniz on that group’s hit single “I Got Five on It” and subsequently by Puff Daddy on “Satisfy You.” The latter two both made it to #2 on the Billboard R&B chart the next year, with “Lean on Me” becoming a big Billboard Hot 100 hit. “Jealousy” also made an appearance on the soundtrack of the film Modern Girls.
Lakeside
During the 70's funk paved its way to the American mainstream and Dayton, Ohio was the epicenter. The Ohio Players, Zapp, Lakeside, Slave, Heatwave, The Sun all came out of Dayton, Ohio. More funk band funkateers than any place in the world came out of Dayton, commanding it to gracefully take its place in history known as "The Land Of Funk" coined in the Lakeside's classic single, "Fantastic Voyage." Lakeside is a world class showband of pioneers driven in funkology! The band has maintained it's Solar Records/Dick Griffey sound over the years. The show stopping group made its mission churning out so many Notorious Funk Gems such as "It's All The Way Live," "I Need You," "Raid," "Fantastic Voyage!" Lakeside's true sound comes from the seasoned musicianship of pioneer Mark Adam Wood, Jr. (aka The Captn) a natural multi-talented funkateer with amazing vocals that Eloquently Captivates a Lakeside Audience and sets it ablaze, over 4 decades!!! As lead singer, Mark's unique voice has carried the Lakeside sound to all far corners of the planet appearing on television too many times to count and continues to share the stage with many of the Greatest Artists. His Powerful Raspy/Husky Tenor is "Remarkably Intact" after years of putting on indefatigable first rate concerts.
Sly Slick & Wicked
The original members were Thomas Hawkins (aka Sonny Daye), Larry Lewis, and Donny Everhart. Daye, a native of Texas, founded the group in East Los Angeles in 1969. "Confessin' a Feeling" b/w "Love's Gonna Pack Up" on Bad Boys Records sold well in the southwestern part of the States, but was unknown virtually everywhere else. Their next single, "Tonight's the Nite came out in 1976; the same song came out again by them in 1981. It's possible Bad Boys released a couple more singles that went unnoticed. In 1981, Bad Boys Records re-released "Tonight's the Nite" with the hokey-sounding "We're Sly, Slick, & Wicked...Wicked" on the flip side; the A-side was all right. In 1991 to become a hot item on oldies shows in Southern Cali and other locales. From the start they modeled themselves after R&B groups like the Delfonics, Moments, Mighty Marvelows, Intruders, Masqueraders, Blue Magic, and Bloodstone. They broke out in 1996 with the Alan Beck-produced Confessin' a Feeling, a marvelous disc loaded with crisply done R&B oldies, featuring a live rendition of "Confessin' a Feeling." It quickly became an underground favorite. Daye sung all the leads, except for "Strange Feelings" (Larry Lewis) and the old Jive Five tune "What Time Is It" (led by Donny "Doc" Everheart). Eddie Stovall and Freddie Holiday supplemented the trio on backing vocals.
