About Kenn Kweder & the Men From Wawa
Known as "the Bard of South Street," singer-songwriter Kenn Kweder has been a folk-rock and rock & roll institution in Philadelphia since the early 1970s. Holding local hero status comparable to Philly jazz icons Bootsie Barnes and Larry McKenna, Kweder consistently prioritized absolute creative control over national fame. In the late 1970s, he was aggressively courted by major labels—including industry mogul Clive Davis at Arista—but refused to compromise his musical direction. Embracing a chameleon-like, formula-defying style influenced by artists ranging from Bob Dylan and David Bowie to Captain Beefheart and Lou Reed, he opted to record completely independently for the Pandemonium label.
Born in Upper Darby in 1952 and raised in Southwest Philadelphia, Kweder pivotally traded his early basketball ambitions for music in his late teens. Fronting his band, Kenn Kweder & the Secret Kidds, he quickly earned a reputation as an irreverent, hell-raising wild man. His explosive stage antics and provocative street marketing shocked club owners, but ultimately made him the toast of Philly’s rock scene, leading him to open for major national acts like the Ramones, Cheap Trick, and Patti Smith.
Sticking firmly to his artistic guns, Kweder led a succession of uniquely named backing bands over the decades, including the Radio Church of God and the Men From K.W.E.D.E.R. He built an extensive independent catalog, beginning with his 1977 debut single "Man on the Moon," followed by landmark releases like the 1986 Kitchen FolkEP, the 1999 Ben Vaughn-produced album Man Overboard, and 1999's Indre Sessions. He cemented his enduring legacy as a permanent fixture of the Philly music scene with the release of his comprehensive retrospective collections, Kwederology, Vol. 1 & 2, in 2022.
