About Tony Trischka
Website | Facebook | Instagram | YouTube | Spotify
Tony Trischka is a pioneering banjo virtuoso, songwriter, educator, and one of the architects of progressive bluegrass. Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1949 and raised on everything from Broadway scores and classical music to American folk, Trischka fell in love with the banjo through the Kingston Trio and immersed himself in the New York folk revival of the 1960s and ’70s. His genre-bending approach emerged alongside musicians like Andy Statman and Kenny Kosek, incorporating bluegrass with jazz, fusion, R&B, avant-garde music, and other influences. His landmark 1974 debut, Bluegrass Light, established his innovative sound, followed by acclaimed projects including A Robot Plane Flies Over Arkansas and World Turning, the latter featuring an extraordinary roster of collaborators and inspiring the documentary Give Me the Banjo, for which Trischka served as musical director and co-producer.
Throughout his career, Trischka has continually expanded the possibilities of the banjo through recording, performance, education, and collaboration. He has worked with artists including Steve Martin, Béla Fleck, Alison Krauss, Tony Rice, David Grisman, R.E.M.’s Peter Buck and Bill Berry, and many others, while his Grammy-nominated Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular and Great Big World helped bring the instrument to new audiences. A highly respected educator, Trischka has taught countless musicians, including Béla Fleck, and has received numerous honors, including the International Bluegrass Music Award for Banjo Player of the Year. His latest project, Earl Jam: A Tribute To Earl Scruggs, was inspired by rare recordings of Scruggs and features an all-star, cross-generational cast including Stuart Duncan, Ronnie McCoury, Darol Anger, Molly Tuttle, Brittany Haas, Dominick Leslie, and Bronwyn Keith-Hynes.
