Alessandro Cortini
w/ Rachika Nayar, Experimental Housewife
About Alessandro Cortini:
Italian musician, producer, composer and instrument builder Alessandro Cortini is one of the foremost figures of contemporary electronic music. A longstanding member of Nine Inch Nails, Cortini has been releasing a steady stream of his own heady music on luminary labels including Mute and Important Records for the past decade. Balancing dark ambience with smokey, pulsing rhythms, his compositions are perfectly restrained, textured and mesmeric. In 2021, in collaboration with boutique synth builders Make Noise, Cortini released his own, custom designed, semi-modular synth, Strega (Italian for ‘witch’). That same year, he used Strega to build his latest full length, Scuro Chiaro (Mute), which Pitchfork described as “pitched somewhere between purgatory and the planetarium [...] consistently managing to thrill and surprise”. Throughout his shadowy rise to fame, Cortini has collaborated with the likes of Lawrence English, Daniel Avery and Merzbow (to name a few).
About Rachika Nayar:
Rachika Nayar is a Brooklyn-based musician whose music has been featured in publications including The New York Times, Pitchfork, New York Magazine, Bandcamp Daily, and The FADER.
On her debut, Our Hands Against the Dusk, from NNA Tapes, Nayar used her guitar as the primary source for sound design, mutating the instrument beyond recognition through layers of digital processing and combining the contorted textures with shimmering synths, orchestral strings, and piano. Soon after, the album’s companion EP, fragments, on RVNG Intl’s imprint Commend, demonstrated the types of raw guitar-playing that would be transfigured into those grander compositions—miniature genre sketches that touched upon everything from post-rock to Midwestern emo. With these two 2021 releases, Rachika resculpted the limits of guitar and electronic music and placed her at the forefront of various contemporary music scenes in New York City and more broadly amongst the likes of Kelly Moran, Tim Hecker, Juliana Barwick.
Nayar’s new album on NNA Tapes, Heaven Come Crashing retains her mangled guitar stylings but expands the color palette by looking not so much to the fretboard, as to the dance floor and the silver screen. With its M1 piano stabs, supersaws, and glimpses of Amen breaks, the album charts a luminescent space between 5 a.m. warehouse raves and the urban freeways of its cover image—romantic, nocturnal, and reckless in its velocity and emotional abandon.
About Expiermental Housewife:
Experimental Housewife is a DJ, producer, and live performer of over twenty years. As a DJ, Ex-House is revered for her natural ability to bridge styles and eras; although a lot of people claim to do this, Ex-House has been credited as someone "who makes it look so easy". Starting out as a teen raver in the 90s before discovering post-rock in the early 00s, Ex-House today brings breadth and refinement to the decks, pumping out either "shoe-destroying" techno and house or markedly visceral ambient selections. Ex-House's original music is filled with unapologetic drone and psychedelic layers, soundscapes you can chew on. She has been lauded for pushing the hybrid production envelope for the last 10 years and has toured Europe and North America, releasing her works on Jacktone, Schmer, True Indigo, Identity Spectrum Records, and her own label Perfect Location.
