As much as we love barbecues, family bonding, friendships, and fireworks, it seems as if the 4th of July has become all about music lately! What a better way than to celebrate our independence with some tunes, right? Well, this weekend we hit up the Welcome America 2014 Festival in Philadelphia, which was jam packed with today’s hottest artists. Between Ed Sheeran’s smooth sounds and Nicki Minaj’s monster verses, the show did not disappoint. If you weren’t able to catch the concert in person or on VH1 and Palladia, don’t worry because we break it down for you below!
Thousands gathered on the Ben Franklin Parkway in the City of Brotherly Love as local artists warmed up the Welcome America 2014 stage. Backed by The Roots as the house band, Aloe Blacc then took the stage to keep the show going. Belting out hits such as Avicii’s ‘Wake Me Up’ and his own ‘The Man’, the crowd roared for him to play more. He thanked attendees for allowing him to open the festival and exited the stage with tons of cheers.
Up next was America’s favorite success story artist – Jennifer Hudson. Although she didn’t win American Idol, she has still won the hearts of the country. The crowd went crazy when Jennifer walked onto the stage, and they were rewarded with her angelic voice. Her big moments were ‘Spotlight’ and when she ended with the powerful Dreamgirls number ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’. Unfortunately, she did have to go, but she has just set the stage for a ladies night.
And then it happened. The current Queen of Hip-Hop Nicki Minaj took over Philadelphia with her smash hit ‘Superbass’ making the crowd go insane. You would have though the festival floor was scorching hot as Welcome America attendees did not stop jumping. The level of hype only grew from there as Minaj ripped through popular verses and features. She slowed it down with the ever-so-appropriate ‘Freedom’ as she saluted the city that welcomed her. Ending with ‘Moment 4 Life’ it was apparent that everyone did, in fact, wish they could have that particular moment for life. As she closed her set, police had to close down the streets as fans flocked to her hotel, which was just down the street.
What better way to end a music festival than with the very guy who had the #1 album the week prior! Yes, you guessed right. It was Mr. Ed Sheeran! Dawning a very different set than Ms. Minaj, our favorite redhead closed out the night with a very chill vibe. He began with his new single ‘Don’t’ and ontinued with hits such as ‘Lego House’ and ‘The A Team’. Fireworks began to breakout during his exit and everyone was suddenly reminded why we were all gathered together. We’ve never felt happier to be from America.
Well done, Philadelphia.
