The Governor’s Ball Music Festival is set to return to Randall’s Island in New York City this weekend and the lineup most certainly packs a punch. The festival will feature artists from all areas of the musical spectrum – from EDM to hip hop, alternative to many that have rejected and redefined the very idea of a genre. The eclectic lineup includes breakthrough artists, industry veterans, and even some new collaborations and special projects.
However, with nearly 70 acts, there is sure to be some set time competition. That noted, we’re here to help you complete the difficult task of finalizing your schedule for the festival. Check out our must-see acts for this weekend’s Governor’s Ball!
Matthew Healy, Ross MacDonald, Adam Hann, and George Daniel, also known as The 1975, are an indie rock band from Manchester. Their self-titled debut album debuted at #1 in the UK in September 2013, and now they are taking their talents across the pond. Not able to attend the festival? Don’t worry because they just announced a huge US tour to hit the road later this year!
#9 – Jack White
Musician, singer, songwriter, producer, designer, director–on and on the list goes–Jack White is set to headline Saturday night at The Governor’s Ball. His new album, Lazaretto, will be released June 10, so expect to be the first to hear some of his new material during this gig. White is known to be very unpredictable, so this should definitely be fun. Although Kanye West headlined the festival last year, perhaps White will be the one to make headlines with a rant this time around?
Contrary to his name, Chance The Rapper is one artist you will definitely not be taking a chance with. In fact, his latest album, Acid Rap, made Rolling Stone’s list of Top 50 Best Albums of 2013. His style is refreshing and soulful, but still traditional to the hip hop culture. Even if you’re not the biggest fan of rap music, we promise you’ll walk away with a smile on your face.
#7 – Disclosure
Brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence, also known as Disclosure, have been dominating the mainstream electronic scene recently with their hit ‘Latch’ featuring Sam Smith. The song was actually released two years ago, but is still gaining momentum on the charts every day! The duo was even nominated for a 2014 Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronica Album. They are super fun to dance to, so make sure you see what all the hype is about this weekend.
New to the music scene is Bleachers. Not new to the music scene is their founder, Jack Antonoff, of the extremely successful band – Fun. For about a year, he kept the project a secret until February 17, 2014 when the first single ‘I Wanna Get Better’ was released along with the launch of Bleachers’ website, social media profiles, and a selection of tour dates. Hopefully, you enjoy the new vibe Antonoff brings to the table just as much as we do.
Her name is Banks… and her twitter name is @hernameisbanks. Some are already calling her this year’s Lorde and we understand why. One-word names seem to pack a one-two punch, and Banks is no exception. You’ve probably heard her hit, ‘Waiting Game’ on the radio, but it doesn’t end there. We predict this singer/songwriter from LA will soon be an international star–quite possibly the winner of many ‘Best New Artist’ awards. Make sure you catch her early in her career because she may be selling out arenas soon!
#4 – Skrillex
Skrillex is just one of those artists we can count on to always melt the face off his listeners. Fresh off his newest release, Recess, Skrillex is expected to bring something different to the music festival. The way he makes jarring sounds melodic is truly amazing. You never know what he is going to do next with music, and we love that about him.
We couldn’t begin to wrap up the list without featuring Bastille. Although it seems as though they are breaking into the mainstream music scene with their hit Pompeii, their music will forever be anthems for alternative lovers. Their lead singer’s voice is insanely unique and it would be hard for anything to stop listening. Expect them to achieve Imagine Dragon’s status by the end of this year!
We really miss Swedish House Mafia. Like really. So when we heard that 2/3 of the group was reuniting for a tour, we found ourselves with huge grins on our faces. When we heard that they were also making an album together, we did cartwheels! There aren’t any doubts in our mind that Axwell and Ingrosso will be the EDM spectacle of the entire Governor’s Ball. Please, please don’t miss out.
#1 – Outkast
Despite the Coachella womp-womp audience, none other than Outkast tops our list of the hottest acts to see at this year’s Governor’s Ball. Coming off of a ten-year hiatus, Andre 3000 and Big Boi need to get in our lives now. Outkast’s catchy tunes have paved the way for music over the past decade and we are so excited for what else they have planned. They are set to make their way to many other music festivals throughout the year, so don’t be too upset if you have to miss them this time. But if you are going to The Governor’s Ball, then do NOT miss them–they deserve some major East coast love.
