Chances are you haven’t been able to turn on the radio lately without listening to the smooth sounds of Sam Smith. His twitter handle reads @samsmithworld, and he has it exactly right: Sam Smith is about to take over the world. The man’s angelic voice is everywhere. Seriously, he has the voice of an angel and has been brought to the United States to bless us all. Whether it’s his falsetto or his vibrato, he will knock you down with his vocals and then cradle you with his soft-spoken attitude. He is an insanely talented, one-of-a-kind artist, and we are happy to welcome him into today’s music scene!
More Than Just A Feature
Before he became known as Sam Smith, he was an accomplished “featuring” artist, appearing on various tracks as “(Some EDM artist) featuring Sam Smith.” This British singer-songwriter saw his feature/featuring debut in October 2012 on Disclosure’s breakthrough single ‘Latch’, which eventually peaked at #11 on the UK charts. Shortly after, he was featured on Naughty Boy’s ‘La La La’ which came in at #1 on the UK charts the week after it was released. Finally, the success of these singles allowed him to focus on his own musical efforts and he released an EP entitled ‘Nirvana’ in October 2013. Smith was even nominated for the 2014 BRIT Critics’ Choice Award and the BBC’s Sound of 2014 poll. He went on to win both, marking major milestones in his career. Smith proved he was ready to take his talents to the U.S. of A.
Sam Smith made his American television debut on Saturday Night Live on March 29, 2014, where he performed ‘Stay With Me’ and ‘Lay Me Down,’ both of which appear on his new album In The Lonely Hour. The album was released in the U.K. two weeks ago debuting in the top spot and registering the third-fastest sales week of any artist this year. With just hours until the U.S. release of In The Lonely Hour, America’s excitement is building. In fact, his newest radio single “Stay With Me” is currently #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on iTunes. “I am genuinely gobsmacked,” Smith told Billboard upon hearing the news. “I keep asking my team if they’ve made a mistake. Thank you so much, America, for everything.” In fact, other A-list artists are also joining in on all the love for Sam Smith. Ed Sheeran recently covered “Stay With Me” and a new version of the song featuring Mary J. Blige was just released. That song reads, “Sam Smith FEATURING Mary J. Blige.” This means his first album already has a feature with a 9-time GRAMMY Award winner. Alright, Smith. We see you.
